SIST EN ISO 9073-8:2025 – Required Testing Instruments
SIST EN ISO 9073-8:2025, titled “Nonwovens – Test methods – Part 8: Determination of liquid strike-through time (simulated urine) for nonwoven coverstocks”, specifies a method for measuring the time taken for a liquid (simulated urine) to penetrate nonwoven coverstocks. The method is intended for laboratory comparison of different nonwoven materials and does not simulate real-use conditions of finished hygiene products.
Test Principle
The test involves dispensing a fixed volume of simulated urine onto a nonwoven specimen placed above a reference absorbent pad. The time until the liquid passes completely through the specimen is measured electronically using corrosion-resistant electrodes embedded in a transparent strike-through plate.
Specimen Preparation
(1) Nonwoven coverstock specimens sized 125 mm × 125 mm.
(2) Conditioned under standard laboratory atmosphere (ISO 139).
(3) Test performed in at least 10 replicates for statistical reliability.
Required Instruments
(1) Burette or Dispensing System – For precise delivery of 5 ml simulated urine at a controlled rate.
(2) Magnetic-Valve Funnel or Automated Delivery System – Ensures uniform and reproducible liquid application.
(3) Acrylic Strike-Through Plate with Embedded Electrodes – Transparent plate with corrosion-resistant electrodes to detect liquid penetration.
(4) Ring Stand and Base Plate – Provides stable support for the strike-through plate and specimen.
(5) Electronic Timer / Stopwatch – High-sensitivity timing device (0.01 s resolution) to record strike-through time.
(6) Reference Absorbent Pads – Multi-layer filter papers to standardize liquid absorption beneath the specimen.
(7) Press Knife / Cutting Tools – For preparing precise specimen dimensions according to the standard.
(8) Analytical Balance – Optional, for verifying specimen mass or uniformity (resolution 0.001 g).
Materials and Reagents
(1) Simulated Urine Solution – Sodium chloride solution with controlled surface tension (~70 mN/m) to mimic human urine. Surfactants may be added for tension adjustment; usage must be reported.
(2) Laboratory-Grade Water – Distilled or deionized water (ISO 3696 Grade 3) for preparing simulated urine and cleaning equipment.
(5) Data Reporting Requirements
(1) Report mean strike-through time and coefficient of variation for each specimen batch.
(2) Include all relevant parameters: deviations, specimen size, number of replicates, conditioning conditions, and any surfactant usage.
(3) Reference SIST EN ISO 9073-8:2025 in the report.
Applications
(1) Hygiene Product Development – Critical for manufacturers of diapers, sanitary pads, and incontinence products.
(2) Quality Control & Material Comparison – Supports objective evaluation of nonwoven coverstocks for liquid barrier performance.
(3) Research & Innovation – Enables testing of new fibers, finishes, or composites to improve liquid strike-through resistance.
(4) Standards Compliance – Provides verifiable test data aligned with ISO and CEN requirements.
Related Standards
(1) ISO 139 – Standard atmospheres for conditioning textiles.
(2) ISO 186 – Sampling methods for paper, board, and nonwovens.
(3) ISO 3696 – Water quality for analytical laboratory use.
(4) EN ISO 9073 Series – Other test methods for nonwoven physical properties (tensile, permeability, etc.).
