What is EN ISO 14419:2025?
Standard Identification
EN ISO 14419:2025
Textiles — Oil repellency — Hydrocarbon resistance test
(Equivalent to ISO 14419:2025)
Standard Purpose
EN ISO 14419:2025 specifies a laboratory method for evaluating the resistance of textile substrates to absorption of liquid hydrocarbons with different surface tensions. The test provides an oil repellency grade, serving as a comparative index of oil stain resistance, particularly for assessing textile finishes and their durability after care treatments.
Test Principle
(1) Drops of standard hydrocarbon liquids with progressively lower surface tension are applied to the textile surface.
(2) Each drop is observed for wetting, wicking or absorption within the specified time.
(3) The highest-numbered liquid not absorbed defines the oil repellency grade of the specimen.
(4) Higher grades indicate better resistance to staining by liquid oily substances.
Standard Test Liquids
The standard specifies a defined series of hydrocarbons, including:
(1) White mineral oil
(2) n-Hexadecane
(3) n-Tetradecane
(4) n-Dodecane
(5) n-Decane
(6) n-Octane
(Liquids are arranged in order of decreasing surface tension.)
Specimen Preparation & Conditioning
(1) Prepare three specimens, approximately 350 mm × 350 mm.
(2) Condition specimens at (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 4) % RH for at least 4 h in accordance with ISO 139.
(3) Tests are conducted at multiple locations across the specimen width.
Required Testing Equipment
Testing according to EN ISO 14419:2025 typically requires:
(1) Oil Repellency Test Kit
– Set of labelled dropping bottles for each standard hydrocarbon liquid
(2) White Blotting / Filter Paper
– Defined thickness, weight and absorbency for absorption observation
(3) Conditioning Chamber
– Controlled temperature and humidity per ISO 139
(4) Laboratory Work Surface & Lighting
– Flat, level surface with adequate illumination for visual evaluation
(5) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
– Gloves, eye protection, and suitable ventilation (flammable liquids)
Evaluation & Results
(1) Record the oil repellency grade as the number of the highest test liquid not absorbed.
(2) Report results for each specimen and the overall assessment.
(3) When required, compare results before and after washing or drycleaning to assess durability.
Method Limitations
(1) Results provide a comparative index, not an absolute stain resistance value.
(2) Oil repellency is influenced by fabric construction, fibre type, dyes and finishes.
(3) The method does not evaluate resistance to penetration by oil-based chemicals.
Typical Applications
(1) Evaluation of oil-repellent finishes on apparel, upholstery and technical textiles
(2) Durability assessment after washing or drycleaning
(3) Quality control and supplier comparison
(4) R&D of oleophobic surface treatments
Referenced Standards
(1) ISO 139 — Conditioning of textiles
(2) ISO 6330 — Domestic washing procedures
(3) ISO 3175 (all parts) — Drycleaning procedures
(4) ISO 6530 — Resistance to penetration by liquid chemicals
