Leather — Physical and mechanical tests — Determination of the static absorption of water
(Equivalent to ISO 2417:2025)
This standard specifies a laboratory method for determining the static water absorption of leather under immersion conditions. It is applicable to all types of leather, particularly heavy leather, where resistance to water uptake is a key performance indicator.
Test Purpose
To determine the amount of water absorbed by leather after defined immersion periods, providing objective data for evaluating moisture resistance, processing quality, and end-use suitability.
Test Principle
(1) A circular leather specimen is immersed in water using a Kubelka apparatus.
(2) After immersion, excess surface water is allowed to drain.
(3) The volume of water absorbed by the specimen is read directly from the graduated tube.
(4) Results are calculated relative to specimen mass or volume.
Required Testing Equipment
Testing in accordance with SIST EN ISO 2417:2026 requires the following instruments:
(1) Kubelka Water Absorption Apparatus
Glass cylinder with graduated bulb/tube (resolution 0.1 ml, total volume approx. 75 ml), equipped with rubber stopper and specimen suspension rod or wire.
(2) Specimen Cutting Die / Press Knife
Circular press knife with 70 mm ± 1 mm inner diameter for single-operation specimen cutting.
(3) Analytical Balance
Accuracy of 0.001 g for determination of specimen mass.
(4) Volume / Thickness Measurement Equipment
Equipment conforming to ISO 2420 for determining specimen volume when required.
(5) Conditioning Chamber
Used for specimen conditioning in accordance with ISO 2419.
(6) Laboratory Water
Distilled or deionized water conforming to ISO 3696 (Grade 3).
Test Procedure
(1) Prepare and condition specimens according to ISO 2418 and ISO 2419.
(2) Fill the Kubelka apparatus with water at 20 °C ± 2 °C or 23 °C ± 2 °C.
(3) Fully immerse the specimen for the specified duration.
(4) Allow drainage and read absorbed water volume 60 s ± 5 s after drainage.
(5) Perform measurements at one or more immersion times (e.g. 15 min, 30 min, 60 min, 120 min, 24 h).
Expression of Results
Results shall be expressed as:
(1) Water absorption per unit mass
Q = (V / m) × 100
where V = absorbed water volume (ml), m = specimen mass (g)
(2) Water absorption per unit volume
P = (V / V₁) × 100
where V₁ = specimen volume (ml)
