Leather — Physical and mechanical tests — Part 2: Determination of double
edge tear load
(Equivalent to ISO 3377-2:2025)
This standard specifies a laboratory method for determining the tear
resistance of leather using the double edge (Baumann) tear method. It is
applicable to all types of leather and provides reliable, reproducible tear-load
data for quality evaluation and comparison.
Test Objective
To measure the maximum force required to propagate a tear in leather when
subjected to controlled tensile loading using a standardized double-edge
specimen and test fixture.
Test Principle
A rectangular leather specimen with a centrally shaped slit is mounted over
turned-up steel tear holders. The specimen is pulled apart on a tensile testing
machine at a constant speed until tearing occurs. The maximum tear force
recorded during the test is used to evaluate tear resistance.
Required Testing Equipment
To perform testing in accordance with SIST EN ISO 3377-2:2026, the following
equipment is required:
Universal Tensile Testing Machine
Equipped with appropriate load capacity and force-measuring accuracy of at
least ±2 % (ISO 7500-1, Class 2), with a constant crosshead speed of 100 mm/min
± 20 mm/min.
Double Edge Tear Test Holders (Baumann Type)
Steel holders with standardized dimensions (10 mm ± 0.1 mm width, 2 mm ± 0.1
mm thickness), bent at right angles to ensure correct tearing geometry.
Specimen Cutting Die / Press Knife
Designed to cut test specimens in a single operation, ensuring consistent
shape and slit geometry as required by the standard.
Thickness Measurement Gauge
Conforming to ISO 2589, used to measure leather thickness at the specified
test point for optional tear strength calculation.
Standard Conditioning Chamber
Used to condition specimens in the standard atmosphere specified in ISO 2419
prior to testing.
Test Results
Test results are reported as:
Mean tear load (N) for specimens cut parallel and perpendicular to the
backbone
Overall mean tear load
Optional tear strength (N/mm), calculated using mean thickness
