Martindale Abrasion Tester Leather Abrasion Resistance Test
There are two methods to judge the wear resistance index of leather, namely the endpoint method and the appearance change method. Martindale Abrasion Tester is an experimental instrument.
Shanghai Qianshi Precision Electromechanical Technology Co., Ltd. was established in 2012. It focuses on the research and development, design, and production of textile testing instruments, and provides textile testing instruments and services for academic research units and testing institutions. Shanghai Qianshi is one of the most competitive R&D textile testing instrument manufacturers in China. The R&D team is composed of a group of experienced engineers. We are committed to serving customers wholeheartedly and striving to promote technological innovation in textile testing instruments.
Leatherwear resistance is the characteristic of leather in resisting wear. Leather wear is an important cause of leather damage. Although the wear fastness of leather has not yet been assessed as a national standard, the wear resistance test of leather is still the most important measure of its quality, and it is extremely important for evaluating the wear fastness of leather.
Leather is mainly divided into natural leather and substitute leather. Natural leather is what we call "genuine leather", mostly composed of cowhide, sheepskin, pigskin, mixed leather, and suede. Among them, cowhide, sheepskin, and pigskin are the three major types of leather used for leather making. Substitute leather is what we call "fake leather", which is a general term for artificial materials such as PVC and PU.
Abrasion resistance is an important indicator to measure its performance and durability. During the test, the friction component is used to apply friction to the rotating sample in the tangential direction to measure the wear resistance of the sample.
Rubbing color fastness: It is the degree to which the color and coating of the leather surface change or transfer when the leather is subjected to friction. When testing the color fastness to friction, the white lining cloth or white wool stick specified in the standard is used to rub the leather surface back and forth under a certain pressure (test head mass 500g, 1000g) (dry rubbing is reciprocating rubbing with dry white lining cloth or white wool stick, and wet rubbing is reciprocating rubbing with wet white lining cloth or white wool stick), and the color change of the leather and the staining of the white lining cloth or white wool stick are evaluated with a standard gray sample card.
The circular sample installed in the sample fixture of the Martindale wear tester is rubbed with the abrasive (i.e., standard fabric) in the plane motion of the Lissajous figure under the specified load, and the sample fixture can rotate freely around its axis perpendicular to the horizontal plane. The wear resistance of the leather is determined based on the total number of friction times when the sample is damaged. During the test, a test sample of a certain size is brought into contact with the standard abrasive under a specified pressure, and the sample is moved relative to the abrasive in a Lissajous trajectory so that the test sample is evenly worn in multiple directions.
Endpoint method:
The number of rotations required to remove 1mm of leather is the thickness index of wear resistance, and the number of friction rotations is recorded as the wear resistance index.
Appearance change method:
After the test sample has been rubbed a certain number of times, observe its appearance changes, such as color change, degree of wear, etc. The degree of appearance change is used as the wear resistance index.
