Geosynthetics - Determination of dynamic perforation (cone drop test)
EN ISO 13433:2025 specifies a standardized laboratory method to evaluate the
resistance of geosynthetics to dynamic perforation using a steel cone dropped
from a fixed height. Applicable to most geosynthetic products, this method
provides reproducible data for product development, quality control, and
performance verification.
Test Principle
(1) A stainless-steel cone is released in free fall onto a horizontally
clamped specimen.
(2) Penetration is quantified by inserting a graduated measuring cone into
the resulting hole.
Drop Conditions
Cone dropped from 500 mm ± 2 mm onto the specimen centre.
Cone Specifications
(1) Impact cone: stainless steel, 45° tip angle, mass 1 000 g ± 5 g
(including guide rod), polished surface, sufficient hardness.
(2) Measuring cone: graduated cone, mass 600 g ± 5 g, rounded tip; markings
must remain readable.
Clamping and Specimen Geometry
(1) Clamping rings internal diameter: 150 mm ± 0.5 mm; gripping-zone margin ≤
7 mm to avoid slippage or cutting.
(2) Specimen must remain flat; bending is to be avoided.
(3) Test five specimens per sample; sampling/preparation per ISO 9862.
Apparatus and Setup
(1) Rigid frame mounted on a hard, non-resilient surface.
(2) Release mechanism or guides allowing free fall without rotation.
(3) Safety screen and protective layer recommended.
Conditioning and Environment
(1) Standard test atmosphere: 20 °C ± 2 °C, 65 % ± 5 % RH (ISO 554).
(2) Specimens are considered conditioned when mass change between successive
weighings (≥2 h apart) ≤ 0.25 %.
Reporting
(1) Include specimen details, cone measurements, hole diameter (mm), test
conditions.
(2) Add interpretation notes if applicable.
Applications and Users
(1) Evaluate puncture/perforation resistance of geotextiles, geomembranes,
and other geosynthetics exposed to dynamic impacts.
(2) Manufacturers for product development and quality control.
(3) Laboratories performing type and acceptance testing.
(4) Specifiers and consultants assessing geosynthetics for infrastructure
projects (roads, landfills, erosion control).
(5) Regulators and procurement teams requiring standardized performance
data.
