Matters needing attention in textile GRS testing and certification
Textile GRS testing and certification is applicable to companies that have a statement describing the content of recycled raw materials in their ultimate products. At present, the certification standards established by recycled fibers are more commonly used. GRS certification is not easy.
GRS certification must comply with four principles:
GRS production management system,
Social responsibility,
Environmental protection,
Chemical use.
The Global Recyde Standard (GRS) for textiles and apparel is a third-party certification standard established by the Dutch Regulatory Union and implemented in January 2008 for the use of recycled fibers after recycling of waste textiles. In January 2011, the Dutch Control Union transferred the copyright of the textile and apparel global recycling standards to the most influential American Textile Fair.
If your customer is a garment factory, every manufacturing link of the garment factory's GRS order must comply with GRS standards, and every transaction between you and the garment factory must also require upstream suppliers to provide raw material TC transaction certificates, invoices, purchases and sales Contract, record. Therefore, if your customer is certified by GRS, it is not only for you to comply with it, but also for your upstream printing and dyeing, fabrics, and yarns to comply with GRS.
The GRS is designated for the needs in the textile industry to check recycled products or certain specific products. What's more important is to let retailers and consumers understand which parts of a particular product are recycled materials and how to handle these materials in the supply chain.
GRS certification principles:
The GRS standard applies to products with a recycled content of 20% or more. Certain exceptions may be applicable. Please refer to the certification procedures reviewed by the Textile Exchange for information on concessions, as well as applicable to any recycled materials that have been accepted and applicable to any supply chain. Scope This standard verifies the chain of custody of recycled materials in accordance with the "content declaration standard".
What are the requirements for GRS certification in the textile and apparel industry?
To apply for GRS certification, it must meet the five requirements of traceability (Tarceability), environmental protection (Environmental), social responsibility (Social), label and general principles (General).
(A) Retrospective criteria
1: Guidelines and regulations related to product transportation and the use of certificates
2: Guidelines on the control of purchased products
3: Guidelines on management
4: Guidelines on quality control
5: Calculate the quantity ratio between GRS materials and non-GRS materials and related criteria using the total balance calculation method
(B) Environmental guidelines
Guidelines on environmental management
1: The certified company must have an environmental policy manual
2: The certified company must conduct a comprehensive archive of chemicals, energy, water consumption and wastewater treatment. Including the treatment of wastewater sediment
3: Waste water that has not undergone wastewater treatment shall not be discharged, and the following treatment methods can be adopted:
In-house wastewater treatment or wastewater treatment by local authorities
4: The wastewater does not contain any additives, and should be cooled below 40°C/104F before it can be discharged
5: Wastewater with a PH value of less than 6 and greater than 9, should be neutralized until it is between the above limits
(C) Social norms
It is applicable to any link of the certification chain and starts at the waste collection station. This also means that the suppliers of waste products are not yet in the scope of certification. Standards are working hard to promote social norms to the supply chain of waste collection stations that have been recycled for the purpose
1: There are guidelines on worker health and safety
2: Guidelines on workers’ rights
3: Guidelines on training
4: Guidelines on hygiene, danger and first aid
(D) Use of label grades and signs
1: Guidelines for label registration and use of signs
(E) General principles
Guidelines for inspections
(F) Related terms
1: Foreign raw materials: any dependent substances that are different from the raw materials used in the recycling process.
2: Abandoned before consumption: The waste produced in the production process is used as a raw material. It does not include reusable raw materials that are generated during the production process and can be reused in the same production process, such as reworked raw materials, re-ground raw materials or fragments.
3: Post-consumer waste: raw materials come from households or other wastes from commercial, industrial and other facilities that are the ultimate consumers of products and such wastes can no longer be used for the intended production purposes. This also includes raw materials recovered by waste recycling stations.
4: Raw materials: pre-consumer or post-consumer waste/old materials that have been used for recycling purposes during recycling and processing. Companies that meet the above principles can apply for GRS, which opens the golden key to the international environmental protection market.
In terms of textile GRS testing and certification documents, the following issues should be paid attention to:
1. Whether there are three basic certificates of the company (three certificates in one);
2. Whether there is a GRS system plan and production management manual;
3. Whether there are GRS production management system documents;
4. Whether there is a supplier evaluation and selection document record;
5. Whether there are order review and risk assessment documents;
6. Whether there is a sales document record;
7. Whether there is a record of procurement documents;
8. Whether there are inspection and production record documents;
9. Whether there is a traceability document record;
10.Whether there is a waste document record.
There are many textile testing and certification standards, here qinsun editor here gives a detailed introduction on the GRS certification standards.
