SIST EN ISO 25089:2025 – Leather Sea Water Fastness Test Apparatus
SIST EN ISO 25089:2025 – Leather: Tests for colour fastness to sea water
specifies a laboratory method to evaluate how leather resists colour change and
staining when exposed to sea water. This European standard, prepared with IULTCS
and CEN/TC 289 input, applies to all leather types at all stages of processing.
The test provides reproducible data for quality control, R&D, and material
specification.
Test Principle
A leather specimen is exposed to a sodium chloride solution simulating sea
water. The method measures:
Colour change of the leather
Staining of an adjacent fabric
Results are assessed visually using grey scales or instrumentally using a
spectrophotometer/colorimeter.
Test Instruments & Equipment
Pressure apparatus: Applies 12.5 kPa ±1.0 kPa via a defined weight-piece and
inert plates (glass or acrylic).
Vacuum desiccator: Removes entrapped air from specimens (≈5 kPa).
Oven: Maintains 37 °C ±2 °C for drying.
Adjacent fabrics: Multifibre (ISO 105-F10) or single-fibre fabrics (ISO
105-F01…F07).
Spectrophotometer or colorimeter: Optional for instrumental evaluation of
colour change and staining.
Laboratory-grade sodium chloride solution: 30 g/l prepared with water
complying with ISO 3696.
Specimen Preparation & Conditioning
Typical test-piece size: ~100 mm × 40 mm.
Finished leather can be tested intact or with broken finish (abrasion using
P180 abrasive paper).
Condition specimens per ISO 2418 and ISO 2419.
Test Procedure
Prepare sodium chloride solution (30 g/l) and condition apparatus.
Apply vacuum treatment to remove air from specimens.
Assemble test-piece with adjacent fabric and place under the pressure
apparatus.
Maintain defined pressure (12.5 kPa ±1.0 kPa) for the required exposure
time.
Dry specimens in oven at 37 °C ±2 °C.
Evaluate colour change and staining using ISO 105 grey scales or instrumental
measurement.
Results Reporting
Include specimen ID, size, whether finish was broken, test medium, apparatus
details, exposure time, and evaluation method.
Record grey scale ratings or instrumentally measured colour differences.
Note any deviations from the standard procedure.
Applications & Users
SIST EN ISO 25089:2025 is primarily used to:
Verify leather performance in marine environments (footwear, upholstery,
garments, automotive leather, leather goods).
Support quality control in tanneries, leather finishing plants, and contract
testing laboratories.
Provide objective data for material specifications, supplier approvals, and
product claims.
Aid R&D teams developing dyes, finishes, and treatments with improved
sea-water resistance.
Primary Users:
Leather manufacturers and finishers
Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies
Product designers, specifiers, and procurement professionals in
marine/outdoor sectors
Regulatory and compliance personnel
