EN ISO 17232:2025 – Leather: Determination of Heat Resistance of Patent Leather
Full title: Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Determination of heat
resistance of patent leather (ISO 17232:2025)
Published by: European Committee for Standardization (CEN), adopted from
ISO
ICS Classification: 59.140.30 – Leather and furs
Purpose
EN ISO 17232:2025 specifies two standardized methods to evaluate the heat
resistance of patent (varnished) leather. Both methods are suitable for all
end-use patent leathers and intended for:
Routine quality control
Product development
Required Instruments and Equipment
Core Testing Instruments
Modified Lastometer – For Method A, with plunger and steel ball
Zwik Apparatus – For Method B, half-cylinder mandrel and clamps
Hot Air Blower / Heating Source – Capable of precise temperature control (±1
°C)
Timing Device – Stopwatch or timer, ±1 s accuracy
Specimen Holders / Clamps – To ensure proper stretching and positioning
Cutting and Perforation Tools – Press knife and sewing needle as
specified
Auxiliary and Safety Equipment
Conditioning Chamber – Maintains temperature and humidity
Protective Gear – Gloves, lab coat, eye protection
Ventilation / Fume Extraction – Removes smoke or fumes generated during
heating
Test Reporting
Reports must include:
Reference to EN ISO 17232:2025 and the method used
Test specimen identification and orientation
Heating temperature and duration
Damage before and after heating (e.g., cracking, crazing)
Conditioning atmosphere
Any deviations from standard procedure
Applications
Quality Control: Ensures patent leather finishes resist heat-induced
damage
Product Development: Compare varnish systems, backing materials, or
processing changes
Material Selection: For products exposed to elevated temperatures (footwear,
vehicle interiors, displays)
Compliance Testing: Supports laboratory conformity assessment and regulatory
verification
