Smoke Toxicity Sampling System (NES 713 / ASTM E662)

Smoke Toxicity Sampling System (NES 713 / ASTM E662)

With the increasing demand for self-extinguishing and fire-safe building and industrial materials, fire performance is commonly improved by adding flame retardants such as halogen- and phosphorus-based compounds. While these additives reduce flame spread, they often significantly increase the toxicity and opacity of gases released during combustion. In addition, certain flame retardants may generate extremely toxic and hazardous substances such as dioxins and furans during fire exposure.

Therefore, the evaluation of smoke toxicity and hazardous combustion gases generated in public-space fires is of critical importance for life safety assessment.

The Smoke Toxicity Sampling System is developed to meet this demand and is designed specifically for sampling and transfer of combustion gases during smoke toxicity testing.

The system mainly consists of a heated gas transfer line and a test and sampling module, ensuring stable, representative and contamination-free gas sampling for subsequent toxicological analysis.

Applications

The Smoke Toxicity Sampling System and Smoke Toxicity Test Equipment are widely used for fire safety evaluation of materials and products, including but not limited to:

(1) Cable and wire insulation materials – power cables, communication cables, railway cables

(2) Building materials – wall panels, ceiling materials, insulation boards, decorative plastics

(3) Transportation materials – aircraft interior panels, seat foams, railway vehicle components

(4) Polymeric materials – plastics, elastomers, rubber compounds, composite materials

(5) Public facility products – floor coverings, furniture components, plastic enclosures

(6) Aerospace and aviation materials – materials tested according to AITM and BSS standards

(7) Fire research laboratories – smoke toxicity analysis combined with FTIR or gas analyzers

Standards

The system complies with or is compatible with the following international standards and methods:

(1) NES 713 – Determination of the Toxicity Index of the Products of Combustion

(2) ASTM E662 – Standard Test Method for Specific Optical Density of Smoke Generated by Solid Materials

(3) AITM 3.0005 – Aircraft Materials Fire, Smoke and Toxicity Test

(4) BSS 7239 – Method for Determination of Toxic Gas Generation by Materials on Combustion

(5) EPA TO-15 – Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in Air

(6) AVTEC BSS 7239 – Aviation Smoke Toxicity Assessment Method
